Yes! We generally need at least a couple weeks notice in order to participate. We will get back to you as soon as we can and let you know if we can accommodate you.
As much as we would love to, UMedics does not currently have the capacity to support chapters outside of Chicago. If this changes in the near future, we will make sure that supporters know. We encourage you to seek training and information on whichever health topics you think are important in your community. We also encourage you to survey the assets in your local area to see if there is work happening similar to UMedics that just hasn’t gotten this level of publicity. Collectively, the co-founders had experience that included training in street medic work, wilderness survival, CERT team, birth work, nursing, and several years based in grassroots community and youth organizing before starting UMedics. If you are interested to get connected with medics and medic collectives, reach out to us and we will connect you with people in your city.
This is wonderful and thank you for wanting to serve your community with us! We occasionally have prospective member meetings for joining our collective. The complexity of our work usually demands much intentional building of deep community rather than occasional volunteers. Send us a message, and we have you on our radar to contact when those are coming up.
When there are volunteer opportunities outside of membership, we'll put out the call in our newsletter or social media pages. Sign up or follow us!
UMedics was created to serve the Black communities of Chicago and is part of a long tradition of community work for racial justice and self-determination. Residence in the metropolitan Chicago area is required for membership in the collective at this time. Also, we absolutely want to hear from our kindreds in other places. Reach out!
Ujimaa Medics spreads emergency first response, community care, and survival skills to access health justice and long-term wellness for all Black Lives.
In the Kiswahili language and in Kwanzaa celebrations, ujima is spelled with one ‘a.’ Ujima is commemorated on the third day of Kwanzaa. It means “collective work & responsibility."
To learn more about this concept, use one 'A' in your searches. 'Ujima.' To find your favorite community care response organization, double the 'A'. 'Ujimaa.'
