Basic Gunshot Wound First Response

The goal of the Basic GSW workshop is to increase someone's chance of survival from physical injury and decrease impact of emotional injury. Offered in-person only. Key topics include: 

• UMedics' General Principles of First Aid
• Tactical awareness
• Treating Wounds without a Kit
• Intro to Tourniquets
• Emotional Aspects of community care response
• Calling 911
• Safety and de-escalation with police
• Community care application to GSW response

 

 

Bella Royal, July 2022, on attending a workshop: I literally had to cry because it was the first time I've ever felt safe in public space with my child when she wasn't  behaving how I needed her to in the moment.. not only did they have childcare they played with my baby and kept her engaged while I took the class and even when she ran to the stage a few times no one was upset. They loved on her having her superstar moment. At the end of the class I thanked them and this sista was like girl this is what community does. When I first started teaching these classes I taught with my baby on my hip. We have to do this work even with the babies and that will forever stay with me. That sparked something in me that helped me understand the community I'm trying to create already exists. Thank yall for the amazing experience of learning how to show up for my people who have been shot and how to show up for my sistas who need to know that community loves them and those babies regardless!
